Scent by the Sea: Patchouli Rose

I hate patchouli. It's usually an instant headache for me, and most of the people I know to wear it usually drench themselves in it. It's a stinky, overpowering smell to me. And the fact that this scent is subtitled "subtle hippy glow" did NOT help me.

That's the disclaimer.

From the website:

Patchouli Rose perfume is one of my ingenue scents...it's a classic rose fragrance oil, with a "green" edge to it, blended with my lightest, most perfumy patchouli essential oil, well aged... the effect is one part girly-girl, one part hippie-chick..a nice combination. (If you are looking for a deeper, earthier patchouli based scent please see my Dark Patchouli blend instead.)

I had received this scent with the sample pack of ten, and I was therefore obligated to at least open the bottle and sniff. Let's get this over with, I told myself, and unscrewed the cap.

In the bottle, really all I smell is the rose. It's a heavy, sweet rose that I quite like, similar to visiting the rose garden on a hot day. The rose is strong but not overpoweringly so. nice.

On my skin, yep, there's the patchouli. The rose and patchouli strike up a conversation, and both get equal talk time. They compliment each other wonderfully, the rose's Victorian sensibilities played against the easygoing hippie patchouli. Jane Austen meets Janis Joplin? It's a really awesome smell.

Wait. I'm ...wearing patchouli.

And I like it.

Quite a lot.

What the hell??

This scent is very strong; a little goes a long way and lasts a long time. It dries down to a pleasantly perfumed powdery smell, a bit like your great-great grandma's face powder, with the patchouli still clinging in there a little bit.

Dumbfounded by the experience of wearing patchouli and liking it, I bought a full sized bottle. I've never worn it and not been complimented on it. It's not quite my favorite perfume - Villainess' Silk & Cyanide still holds that title - but it's my favorite new scent for dress up. I reserve Silk & Cyanide for the most special of occasions, and wear this one otherwise.

Overall: 9 of 10. They made me want to wear patchouli. THEY ARE MAGICIANS, I TELL YOU.

A scent even patchouli haters can love.
I had the same reaction to the Patchouli Rose scent. Initially, I thought I would hate it. Patchouli is a scent that most love or hate and I tend to lean towards the latter.

Most of the scents from scentbythesea smell very strong at first, but dry down nicely. This scent is comforting, familiar, earthy and warm. This is a scent that even patchouli haters can love!

Did you order the samples from scentbythesea? What are your favorite scents from the shop?
